According to sources in the internet, Oprah Winfrey said this in an NBC news interview:
“I have reservations with the results. If the only basis is the Q and A portion, after having been trimmed down to 5, Ms. Philippines deserved to win. What made her different from the rest is that she had no seconds to rethink of her answer as she had no interpreter to break the ice. The rest had their interpreters and having breaks on seconds to think about their answers. Hands down, Ms. Philippines answered straight to the point.”
I have not yet found an official statement or written report on the said NBC news coverage, so this is still a rumor. Regardless, I believe that Miss Philippines should have won. Not only does she have an overwhelming fan support but her answer to the question was simply stunning. The Miss Universe commentators even said that her answer blew them away.
Senator Miriam Defensor Santiago also wants to contest the results of the show believing that it was rigged because they didn’t want a winner to come from Asia.
“”I’m going to file a protest if possible… if there’s a legal remedy I don’t think that it might be taken as lacking in sportsmanship.”
Senator Miriam’s statement is official and can be read here.
